Joseph: Staying Faithful to God in Difficult Times
Joseph as a young boy was the favored son of his father. There is little indication of his character as a young boy. Perhaps he was a little foolish to wear his “special” coat so frequently; perhaps he was naïve in sharing his dreams with his entire family, but there is no indication that Joseph had any major character flaws. He was obviously extremely spoiled. As we take a quick trip through his life, we will attempt to find out how he was able to stay pure in his walk with the Lord under very difficult circumstances. What can we learn from the example of Joseph?
1. Read Genesis 37:12-28. Why did Joseph’s brother’s hate him? Do you think Joseph was aware of their feelings? Why or why not?
2. Read Genesis 39:6-10. Why was Joseph able to resist Mrs. Potiphar? Why do you think Potiphar believed his wife’s version of the story without even speaking to Joseph to hear his side?
3. Read Genesis 39:20-23. Joseph has been miserably treated in every major event in his life. How must he have acted in prison that the warden gave him such favor? How would most people have acted in that situation?
4. Skim Genesis 41, Joseph’s interaction with Pharaoh. What in Joseph’s behavior and speech, “earned” his favor with Pharaoh?
5. Think of a time in your life when you were treated unfairly. You don’t have to share the details, but how did you react? How did things turn out as a result of your reaction? (again you don’t have to give details)
6. Joseph’s life is an example of Romans 8:28. Describe a time in your life when that verse proved true for you.
7. What are some other lessons we can learn from the example of Joseph?
